Full Album Friday
Janky Star by Grace Ives
Welcome to your favorite corner of the internet and thank you for joining me in another Full Album Friday. This week we’re talking about a pop goddess on the rise. Think Robyn….think Sylvan Esso….think the most uplifting dance vibes. Cool girls only!! (But also of course everyone is invited). We’re talking about Janky Star by Grace Ives.
Oh my god hiiiiiiii! Please. Please!!! I beg of you and I ask so kindly, listen to this album. If you listen to any album listen to this one (and then her newest album Girlfriend). Remember that time when I asked you to listen to Chappell Roan or my friend showed me Olivia Dean…and then I shared it with you…or even Royel Otis. Okay so that’s this. We NEED to lock in. Grace is on the rise and she’s gonna blast off after opening for Miss Rodrigo.
Janky Star is a 27 minute electronic, blissful, feminine empowered escape from reality. Released on June 10, 2022 this album is perfect for summer days with an iced coffee and a convertible. Or…like literally any other day doing literally anything in your life. I found Janky Star in early 2025 and I white-knuckled this album with hopes Grace would release new music AND SHE DID!!
The album starts with the euphoric and soft Isn’t It Lovely. In moments of the song you hear birds chirp and what even sounds like glasses clinking, like a snapshot into every day life. Loose makes me want to punch the air or run miles, I’m SO full of energy after this song. Burn Bridges, a song about…writing songs is a good continuation of the building energy of this album. Angel of Business is MY FAVORITE SONG. Oh my god this song is perfect. A small bit of pop heaven, if you will. Lazy Day brings the vibe back down, a good wandering around song. Have no fear though, Shelly picks everything back up. A rock-pop tune meant for lip syncing in your underwear around your room while you contemplate telling your crush you’re madly in love with them. Back in LA is a digital playground that reminds me of early Remi Wolf. On the Ground is when you’re gonna wanna pick your mic (hairbrush) back up. A wonderful sing a long where Grace’s vocals catapult us into another universe. A true revival to quality vocals in pop and yes babe she somehow sounds even better live! Win Win is in the same vein as Loose and Back in LA, this bounce-y spacey pop sound that she’s perfected. The album closes with possibly one of the greatest pop songs to date Lullaby. A song guaranteed to get stuck in your head, thankfully. It feels like she’s tapped into something song writers were able to grasp in the 80’s or even the 90’s. A sing along that is timeless and good…and not because you heard it 50 times on the radio but because it’s actually fucking good!! What’s so wild to me about this song is that it not only perfectly closes out this album but it almost sends you into this loop. The moment it ends, hit play on the first track and you’ll see what I mean.
I hope that you’ll enjoy this album as much as I have. I love a girly pop diva that makes me proud to be a woman. That’s what this album is to me. A snapshot of this messy, beautiful life we’re all trying to navigate. Below I’ll include music videos, interviews and live performances.
